Do You Have Extra Oil?

I sit here looking out the open window, sun glistening through the trees as they dance in the wind, lace curtains flowing in the breeze, the smell of summer fading into fall. Funny how you cannot see the wind, but you can see the things it touches. It is the same with the light of the moon. You cannot see its light source, but only what the sun’s light falls upon. It is no wonder that God likens Himself to wind and light. Recently, however, I began to wonder why the Lord likens His Spirit to oil.

My older children were studying the parable of the ten virgins. They were asking questions and it caused me to ponder a few unknowns in my own heart. What is the lamp a symbol of? What about the oil? Am I a wise virgin or a foolish one?

THEN THE kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish (thoughtless, without forethought) and five were wise (sensible, intelligent, and prudent). For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take any [extra] oil with them; But the wise took flasks of oil along with them [also] with their lamps. While the bridegroom lingered and was slow in coming, they all began nodding their heads, and they fell asleep. But at midnight there was a shout, Behold, the bridegroom! Go out to meet him! Then all those virgins got up and put their own lamps in order. And the foolish said to the wise, Give us some of your oil,
for our lamps are going out. But the wise replied, There will not be enough for us and for you; go instead to the dealers and buy for yourselves. But while they were going away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were prepared went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. Later the other virgins also came and said, Lord, Lord, open [the door] to us! But He replied, I solemnly declare to you, I do not know you [I am not acquainted with you]. Watch therefore [give strict attention and be cautious and active], for you know neither the day nor the hour when the Son of Man will come. (Matthew 25:1-13 AMP)

Everyone person alive has a lamp, believers and unbelievers. Does that surprise you? All of these virgins had a lamp.

Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is Yahweh’s lamp…

All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being. (John 1:3 AMP)

In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines on in the darkness…. John 1:3-4 In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it]. There it was–the true Light [was then] coming into the world [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] that illumines every person. (John 1:4, 5, 9 AMP)

Psalms 18:28 For you will light my lamp, Yahweh. My God will light up my darkness.

The darkness of this world has resulted in the separation of man and his God. All the virgins were separated from the bridegroom in the darkness. All of the virgins grew weary and slumbered. All of the virgins’ lamps went out in the darkest part of night.

For there shall be no reward for the evil man; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. (Proverbs 24:20 AMP)

for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God; (Romans 3:23 ASV)

It was at the darkest hour when the extra oil became a critical component. The extra oil is indeed our Paraclete, our Helper, the Holy Spirit. Their help was not to be found in their own lamps or in themselves, for their lights had gone out. Only the wise whose foresight caused them to bring extra oil were able to relight their lamps and find their way to the bridegroom and ultimately, the wedding feast.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God….. I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God! That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (John 3:3, 5, 6 ASV)

The five wise virgins’ lamps were now lit with an oil that never ends. It’s a steadfast light that guides them all the way into the wedding feast, to the voice of their Beloved!

You shall command the Israelites to provide you with pure oil of crushed olives for the light, to cause it to burn continually [every night]. (Exodus 27:20 AMP)

There is no doubt that this oil is indeed a picture of the Spirit of Christ Himself, the perfect Son of God who was crushed for our iniquities. Apart from Him there is no eternal light.

True Christians know that the day of reckoning lies ahead. They heed the Lord’s warning to prepare for His return.

For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation. 2 Co. 6:2

Jesus also said, “I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich; and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself, and that the shame of thy nakedness be not made manifest; and eyesalve to anoint thine eyes, that thou mayest see.” (Revelation 3:18 ASV)

But what of the day of reckoning? It will be too late to buy from the Lord gold refined by fire, white garments, and eye salve.

Of what use is money in the hand of a [self-confident] fool to buy skillful and godly Wisdom–when he has no understanding or heart for it? (Proverbs 17:16 AMP)

True Christians will be ready when the cry is given. They saw the cost that the Father paid for us and they know Him, the power of His Resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings.

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have wherewith to complete it? Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? (Luke 14:28, 31 ASV)

The Lord will accept nothing less than ALL of you. He is worth everything, but nothing compares to His value. Oh dear brothers and sisters in Christ….. May we all live our lives in such a way that Yes, furthermore, we too would count everything as loss compared to the possession of the priceless privilege (the overwhelming preciousness, the surpassing worth, and supreme advantage) of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord and of progressively becoming more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him [of perceiving and recognizing and understanding Him more fully and clearly]. (Philippians 3:8 AMP)
